A Crowborough based non-profit organisation is helping over 65s who are feeling isolated or who may be living with dementia, and its members are certainly enjoying the benefits: “I laughed so much on Wednesday night my tummy hurt!” Caryl, who attended the Supper Club at the Crow and Gate.
The Good Company People aims for older Crowborough residents to enjoy more independent fulfilling lives for longer. The organisation provides social experiences curated around the hobbies and interests of its members, connecting people and sparking friendships. Recent socials have included wine tasting at a local vineyard, baking with Laura from Fresh Dough, pottery, and making music at The Blue Anchor Pub
As well as arranging club events, The Good Company People provides support for those living with dementia and their carers. The free Carers Concierge service provides carers with one point of contact to help them and the person they care for access statutory and voluntary services. The concierge team develops a personalised support plan and supports with regular check-ins over the phone, in person visits and a dedicated phone helpline.
At the regular carers meetups members can share experiences and feelings in a safe environment. They are attended by speakers from health and social care and the session is facilitated by a dementia specialist.
For those who would benefit from a little extra support to get out and about to continue what they love, The Good Company People has trained Hosts to provide affordable respite. Whether they fancy an art tutorial and 2-course lunch with Gabriel in Rotherfield, or going out to play pool and darts with Bill, attending a Club event with Helena, or doing crafts with Emma – there is something for everyone. Hosts are East Sussex County Council Support With Confidence approved and costs start at £15 per hour, which includes refreshments, travel and activities.
The Good Company People covers Crowborough, Mayfield, Rotherfield, Wadhurst, Hartfield & Groombridge. Check the what’s on page on our website for upcoming events.
“I am so pleased I picked up the phone to The Good Company People. Everyone is so welcoming. Andre remembers the walking club and commented on how friendly everyone is. The set up of The Good Company People is so good as it’s not institutionalised, it’s based around what people like doing.” – Elspeth
