The Trust is looking for someone to manage it’s eleven acre site on the edge of Rotherfield Village from April 2015. The position is voluntary and will suit someone who has a love of the countryside and the natural environment.
The Reserve consists of approximately 80 per cent ancient woodland (believed to be over 500 years old) and approximately 20 per cent wildflower meadows which contain a rich variety of indigenous Flora and Fauna. There is a band of willing volunteers who currently meet on the first Tuesday and third Sunday of each month who expertly complete the tasks, when required.
The main annual tasks (carried out by the volunteers or by contractors) consists of: Maintaining paths, fences, clearing brambles and the occasional fallen tree, mowing the flower meadows in late Autumn to encourage wild flower growth and to keep a balance between lightly managed land and wild environment.
The Powdermill Trust was founded in 1980 with the objective “To preserve wildlife sites, the habitats of Flora and Fauna of East Sussex.” Membership is currently around 180.
The Trust is a limited company and registered Charity and is run by a board of Trustees who offer help and advice, when required. The Trust also rents a three acre wetland site at Powdermill Wood near Battle and oversees the Crowhurst Nature reserve in conjunction with The Crowhurst Society. These sites are independently managed.
