Dementia Awareness Week – 19th – 25th May

Did you know that Crowborough has a dedicated Dementia Forum working to improve the lives of local residents living with dementia, as well as their families and carers? With the number of people affected by dementia on the rise, the forum aims to make Crowborough a truly Dementia-Friendly town—an initiative that benefits the whole community.

Supported by Wealden District Council and the Wealden Dementia Action Alliance, the forum is open to all and includes a range of local organisations:

  • Wealden District Council
  • Oasis Community Church
  • St Barnabus
  • Wealden Citizens Advice
  • East Sussex County Council
  • The Good Company People
  • Sussex Housing & Care
  • Care UK
  • Crowborough Town Council
  • Time for Dementia
  • Freedom Leisure
  • Connections Café
  • Crowborough Rotary Clb
  • Rotherfield St Martin
  • Care for the Carers
  • Happiness in Motion
  • Sussex Partnership Trust
  • Pinegrove Pictures

Together, they are working to increase awareness and provide support through education, events, and practical initiatives.

The group has already hosted awareness sessions at the Town Hall, Community Centre, and local Business Expos.  Through ‘Dementia Friends’ training, they help people understand what dementia is—and what it isn’t.  They also run a monthly Community Café at Oasis Community Church and a Sporting Memories group, where attendees can reminisce about past sporting events or discuss current games.

In addition to supporting individuals, the forum is also helping local businesses gain Dementia Friendly accreditation through a Wealden District Council scheme.  Looking ahead, the forum plan to expand free awareness sessions, including one during Dementia Awareness Week, and develop a district-wide booklet detailing Dementia Friendly activities available to residents.
