Crowborough Opticians has been a fixture in the town centre since 2017. Owner Matthew Smee is dedicated to providing the highest level of service to his customers and helping them understand that maintaining good eye health goes beyond simply wearing glasses. Sight is often taken for granted, yet it means so much to us all. Preserving vision and preventing its deterioration is essential to maintaining our lifestyle and well-being. Good eyesight gives us confidence and helps us remain independent.

EYE HEALTH

Dry Macular Degeneration is a type of age-related eye disease which causes gradual loss in the centre of the eye and affects hundreds of thousands of people in the UK.  Until recently, there was no treatment available.

Crowborough Opticians are pleased to announce that they are now able to offer a safe and FDA approved treatment for Dry Macular Degeneration.  This treatment is non-invasive and uses low-level light-based therapy which is known to help the cells at the macula (a small, yellow spot in the centre of the retina at the back of the eye) to improve their function.

Valeda is an approved light-based therapy for Dry Macular Degeneration which can help to improve overall visual function.  Currently there are only approximately 40 places across the UK that can offer this new therapy.   Crowborough Opticians are proud to be one of the few to able to offer this to patients.

Valeda light therapy slows the progression of the disease and in some cases can improve vision.  The treatment slows the progress of cell degeneration to a point where the patient is less likely to develop geographical atrophy; this is a point at which cells have died and cannot be regenerated resulting in sight loss.

Whilst there is currently no cure for Dry Macular Degeneration, Crowborough Opticians feel privileged to be able to offer patients an opportunity and access to the latest therapy available.  Not all patients will be the right candidates for therapy, however, the experienced optometrists at Crowborough Opticians will be able to assess patients and offer the best advice.

OCT scan allowing for early detection of any issues

Advanced Retinal Screeningusing OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) – this is a non-invasive imaging test using harmless light technology to produce a 3D replica of the retina’s layers.  It is used to offer early diagnosis for conditions such as glaucoma, macular  degeneration and many other eye conditions.

There are many other tests and treatments available at the practice and Crowborough Opticians believe in addressing the root causes of eye conditions with long-term solutions, rather than relying solely on short-term fixes like eye drops.
